Otero CR E - Otero County
Ownership: None Listed
Description: The one and only reason to come here is the small resident population of Black-throated Sparrows--this is the most reliable place to see that species east of the Continental Divide. In the spring when they are singing the sparrows can be fairly easy to find (in the morning, anyway), but during the summer use of a tape will probably be required. They vacate the area in the winter. Brewer's and Cassin's Sparrows also breed here. The small riparian corridor along the Purgatoire River, about a mile down this road, may be worth a look for migrants or Ladder-backed Woodpecker, but please bird the entire area from the road, as it is all private property.
Habitat: Sagebrush
Directions: From US 50 in the heart of La Junta, head south on CO 109 (signed for Pritchett and Kim). Follow the road south approximately eighteen miles to the turnoff to CR E on the right (west).
