Cottonwood Marsh photo by Peter Burke

FR 503 North of Creede - Mineral County
Aliases:
Ownership: None Listed
Description: If you follow the main road north out of Creede, you will quickly find yourself funneled into a spectacular narrow canyon; look for White-throated Swift. If you keep left at the junction a half-mile north of town, you will eventually rise out of the canyon into some of the best montane habitat along a road in Mineral County, with aspen, douglas-fir, and streamside willows all well-represented. The road is also noteworthy for its extensive stand of Bristlecone Pine. The road continues to be well-maintained as far as the Equity Mine, just a couple of miles south of the Saguache county line; passenger cars may be able to continue farther north with care. Just south of the mine is an impressive bare scree slope extending up to treeline which may have rosy-finch potential.

Habitat: Cliff Face, Stream, Aspen Grove, Mixed Conifer Forest, Streamside Willow, Mountain Meadow
Elevation:
Directions: FR 503 is the continuation of Main Street in Creede, and goes north for 7.5 miles before becoming a four-wheel drive road.
